Phillip Morgan Photography: My primary interest in photography is, as Minor White expressed it, not the thing itself, but what else the thing is. Ive been chasing after what else things can be since the Autumn of 1999, when I began making B&W photographs with a Seagull TLR and developing and printing them in a converted bathroom darkroom. During the intervening 14 years, I have worked on developing technical skill that is up to the challenge of expressing the what else of things, an openness to the quiet voice of the muse, and the discipline to discard the merely scenic in favor of showing you what seems deeply magical. This development, of course, is a lifelong path, and I know Ill never reach the endpoint because there is no endpoint and no apex of achievement, only a fractalline unfolding and deepening. Ive learned how to make powerful photographs in three ways: trial and error, self-study, and study with master photographer John Wimberley.
